The OR Black Box®, an innovative tool inspired by aviation safety protocols, is transforming surgical practices by using artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance safety and improve workflow in the operating room (OR).

Initially slow to be adopted due to the complexity of data analysis, recent advancements in AI have made it possible to automate much of this process, significantly reducing the time required to analyze data from laparoscopic surgeries. The system captures a wide array of data, including video, audio, and sensor information, to identify potential risks and improve surgical outcomes.

Early results show that it helps identify factors like distractions in the OR, the frequency of unnecessary interruptions, and areas for team improvement. With growing adoption at hospitals in Canada, the U.S., and Europe, the OR Black Box is expected to become a global standard, helping to create safer, more efficient operating environments. It also fosters a cultural shift in hospitals by focusing on both positive behaviors and areas needing improvement, making quality and safety more collaborative and less punitive.
