The OR Black Box® project, led by Dr. Teodor Grantcharov, aims to reduce surgical errors by installing cameras and microphones in operating rooms to record both video and audio during surgeries. This technology tracks every action and conversation, helping to identify and learn from mistakes, with the ultimate goal of improving patient safety and outcomes.
Initially tested in Toronto, the project is expanding to Ottawa, where the first black box will be installed at the General campus of the Ottawa Hospital. Early findings have shown that reducing the number of unnecessary people in the operating room can significantly decrease errors, and the data collected is also being used for team training and improving safety protocols. Despite initial concerns from medical staff, the project has led to a positive shift in attitudes towards safety, with many patients expressing support for the initiative.
