New York, NY — February 25, 2025 — Surgical Safety Technologies proudly announces its support for an innovative collaboration between the Mount Sinai Global Surgery Program and Kyabirwa Surgical Center in Eastern Uganda, advancing global healthcare equity by leveraging the revolutionary OR Black Box®. This technology combines unprecedented audiovisual data capture with artificial intelligence to analyze the entire surgical experience – including the procedure and the surgical environment – to provide actionable insights that transform how technique is matured and clinical research is conducted across continents.
A key component of the collaboration leverages the OR Black Box’s ability to deliver a comprehensive surgical knowledge repository, allowing Kyabirwa surgeons to build and access a growing library of surgical videos, provide structured feedback, and utilize cases for training and research. This systematic approach to capturing and sharing surgical expertise accelerates learning and drives continuous quality improvement across both institutions.
"This technology-driven approach represents a paradigm shift in how we deliver surgical care globally," says Linda P. Zhang, MD, Director of Global Surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital Department of Surgery. “The ability to share these de-identified videos between our institutions is helping us bridge a global surgery gap – both in care access and clinical research diversity. We’re beginning to study cervical cancer cases and look forward to expanding to other research opportunities soon.”
"Technology is fundamentally changing the trajectory of surgical care in Africa," says Dr. Joseph Okello Damoi, Head of Surgery at Kyabirwa Surgical Center. "In our region, where 84% of the population lives in rural areas and over 75% typically travel more than two hours for basic surgical services, we're witnessing a transformation in healthcare delivery. Everyone has a right to healthcare, and no one should die from conditions that can be treated with simple surgical procedures. This partnership and technology are helping us make that vision a reality."
Surgical Safety Technologies' support of this collaboration underscores the company's commitment to democratizing healthcare and making surgery safer and more reliable globally. The Center's success demonstrates how technology can effectively transcend geographical boundaries and improve access to the five billion underserved people worldwide.
"Our OR Black Box® technology is breaking down barriers in surgical education, research, and practice," says Dr. Teodor Grantcharov, Founder of Surgical Safety Technologies. "We're proud to be part of this collaborative effort to improve patient outcomes and quality of life, while fostering continuous learning across global healthcare systems."
About the Mount Sinai Global Surgery Program
The Mount Sinai Global Surgery Program is boldly addressing a critical global health crisis where over 5 billion people lack access to safe, affordable surgical care—a devastating gap responsible for 17 million preventable deaths annually. By developing the groundbreaking Kyabirwa Surgical Center (KSC) in Uganda, the team is challenging fundamental misconceptions about surgical care in underserved regions through an innovative, self-sustaining ambulatory surgical center that provides essential procedures like hernia repair, appendectomy, breast disorder surgery, and cancer biopsies. The KSC represents a scalable prototype designed to transform international surgical care, featuring its own water and power sources, employing local Ugandan surgeons, and leveraging advanced digital interfaces with Mount Sinai Health System campuses to enable virtual surgical consultations and real-time medical support. This pioneering initiative directly confronts the perception that surgical services are too expensive and complex to implement in resource-limited settings, offering a replicable model that could dramatically improve healthcare access for millions of people worldwide.
