Overview

Surgical Data Science (SDS) is an emerging research field that aims to enhance interventional healthcare through data capture, organization, analysis, and modeling. While data-driven approaches have seen success in radiological and clinical data science, surgical applications have lagged in translational progress. This publication, based on an international workshop with leading SDS researchers, reviews current practices, key achievements, and initiatives in the field.

The study focuses on four main areas: infrastructure for data acquisition, storage, and access within regulatory constraints; data annotation and sharing; data analytics; and a review of available SDS products and their translational progress from academia.

Results

The authors present a roadmap for accelerating clinical translation and realizing the full potential of SDS, developed through an international multi-round Delphi process. This comprehensive overview aims to address the challenges facing SDS and provide a framework for future advancements in the field.
